Chapter Nine

Lany

My world had turned into a whirlwind of activity.

I was just along for the ride.

After Sal came back into my hospital room and explained to me that I was in danger—and I repressed the urge to roll my eyes at the guy, ‘cause no shit—I was examined by the doctor and then shot up with some really nifty drugs. From there, I was lifted up into Sal’s arms, carried out of my room, down an employee elevator, and into a waiting car.

Most of that passed in a blur, thanks to those really nifty drugs.

By the time my head cleared enough for me to know what was going on, I was lying snug in my own bed, Sal stretched out on the bed next to me.

Watching.

I still wasn’t sure what was going on.

“Caro.” Sal spoke in an affectionate whisper.

God, that deep husky voice got me every time.

“Hey.”

“So,” Sal began, “I was thinking.”

He paused as if he thought I had something to say about that. I probably should, but I was too interested in hearing him talk some more so I kept my mouth shut.

“I know things are kind of crazy right now,” Sal continued. “But, maybe once everything settles down, we should get married.”

I blinked rapidly as tears sprang to my eyes, flooding them and blurring my vision. “You want to…”

I couldn’t breathe.

I had all but given up on us ever getting married and now Sal was offering it to me on a silver platter.

“Am I going to die?”

It was a legitimate question under the circumstances.

“What?” Sal snapped.

The happy smile was gone from Sal’s face.

“Am I going to die?” I asked again.

“Of course you’re not going to die.” Sal sounded really angry. His voice was all growly like. “What would make you ask something like that?”

“Because you seem to think our lives will ever settle down.”

Duh.

Sal stared at me for about three seconds before he burst out laughing. His hand hooked around the back of my neck and drew me to him, which was kind of where I wanted to be in the first place, so I didn’t resist.

He pressed our foreheads together, his copper colored eyes heated and melty. “Voglio passare il resto della mia vita con te.”

Oh, he was bringing out the big guns.

“I want to spend the rest of my life with you, too, Sal,” I replied. “I’m just kind of worried about how much longer that life will be.”

“An eternity.”

My brow furrowed. “You can’t promise that.”

“Bet me,” Sal said with such conviction, I had no other choice but to believe him.

“Sal.”

“Marry me, Lany.” Copper colored eyes searched mine with a sheen of desperation…and maybe fear. “I want everyone to know that you belong to me. I’m tired of having to wait until your parents give permission before the doctors will talk to me. I’m tired of others thinking either of us is available, because believe me, baby, we’re not.”

“Is that the only reason you want to marry me?”

“God, no!” Sal rolled me, moving to partially cover me.
